Import/Export License
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is a prerequisite for any entity—be it an individual, partnership, company, or other business forms—engaged in importing or exporting goods and services in India.
The IEC serves as a business identification number for international trade, enabling:
- Customs Clearance: Facilitates the import and export of goods through customs.
- Bank Transactions: Required for receiving or making payments in foreign currency.
- Export Benefits: Eligibility for government schemes and incentives under the Foreign Trade Policy.
- Global Market Access: Opens avenues for businesses to expand internationally.
Once issued, the IEC is valid for the lifetime of the entity and does not require renewal. However, it is mandatory to update the IEC annually between April and June to keep it active. Failure to do so may result in deactivation of the IEC
